Native to South Yorkshire, where it was developed over 200 years ago, the ‘Woodie’ is now one of the Rare Breeds of sheep that is being watched over by the RBS Trust, with less than 900 ewes in the UK.
The largest British hill breed, Whitefaced Woodlands are good mothers and prolific with twins being the norm. Both sexes are horned with a strong large framed body and fine quality soft wool. Lambs mature more slowly than commercial breeds but at an economically viable rate to produce a sizeable carcass of very high quality tender meat with superb flavour. The ewes are docile and easy to handle and when crossed with a terminal sire such as the Hampshire Down produce faster maturing lamb so that we can have lamb available throughout the year.
The Christmas Hill flock started out as the Fuglemere flock in 1991 based in the Chiltern Hills and had achieved considerable show success in the Home Counties. The move to Suffolk in 2006 has enabled Jo to return to showing and continue improving the type and quality of the flock. To date there are many new East Anglian show champions in the flock to carry on the line.
Most years we have a good selection of pedigree ewe lambs and ram lambs for sale.
