Longhorns

When Michael and Jo Taylor moved to look after Christmas Hill Farm, they brought with them their long established “Fuglemere” herd of Longhorn cattle. Then we were lucky enough to be able to buy the well known “Glaven” herd of Longhorn cattle from Kerry Long and her family in Norfolk.

Together, these two herds have combined to make one magnificent herd of over 60 animals, including cows, calves and followers. A spectacular sight on a misty fen morning!

Despite the fearsome look of this breed, (some with horns 3 feet long), they are of the gentlest nature and one of the easiest breeds to handle in the field.

It is an ideal suckler cow as it combines ease of calving, good mothering instincts and rich, high butterfat fat milk on which the calves do well.

The breed is also very long lived and will continue to produce calves for many years.

Kingfisher, the Fuglemere matriarch, is now 20 years old.

Meat

Longhorn meat is renowned for its texture, flavour and succulence across the whole range of cuts and joints – due to the ‘marbling’ in the lean meat without excess external fat. This is particularly enhanced by the slow growing process with no forcing to finish at an early age, as in some continental breeds.

All our meat animals at Christmas Hill Farm have enjoyed a long and peaceful life.

Breeding Stock

We have been fortunate enough to win the ‘Best Young Stock’ class for two years running in the Eastern Region Herd Competition and are pleased to offer several well grown heifers for sale. Please email or phone with enquiries.
