Jacob Sheep

The Woolpit Flock of Jacob Sheep has been in existence since 1983.

I have concentrated, over the years, on selling pedigree breeding animals and the ‘Woolpit’ name is in the blood lines of many successful flocks around the country.

Lambs racing

It is joy to watch the new seasons crop of lambs as they play – and to select the next year’s breeding animals…

Of course, every year, there are lambs that are not good enough to sell for breeding I keep these sheep for at least a year so that they have a long life, (in most commercial situations, lambs live only three months before going to the butcher) during which they are relaxed and stress free as they graze our water meadows.  This relaxed and well fed existence means that the resulting meat is tender and full of flavour because it has had time to develop properly.

Not all good enough for breeding

Our Farm Shop and Farmers’ Market stall will be offering Jacob Lamb from time to time so it is worth looking out for it – especially in the Spring when the sheep will have been about one year old when they go to the abattoir.

Jacobs are easily trained to follow a bucket!Jacob Sheep are very individual and distinctive animals.  They have great personality and no two are the same.  They are great fun to work with and are good sheep for the beginner – basic knowledge of husbandry is essential, but the Jacob has fewer problems than some of the heavier breeds.
